Welcome!  Progression-Matters is a website dedicated to the view that children and young people with profound and multiple learning difficulties or severe learning difficulties are learners and deserve recognition for what they achieve, often in the face of great personal challenges.

However, the reality is that they make up a very small proportion of the total learning population and national government assessment systems (which shape the way we view success and failure) have until now only measured and reported what these learners cannot do.

So Progression-Matters is about promoting approaches to positive assessment and the frameworks and tools which support this. It is about assessment which values the individual learner’s journey  – where did it begin? Where has it taken them so far and what does that tell us about how and where they might go in the future?
